Why the Pursuit of Personal Style Matters More than You Might Think
Why embracing your style is more about preserving your identity and authentic self.
To all of you who are new to this growing community, WELCOME!
I am so grateful to have you with me today. Trust me when I say I don’t take your attention lightly, so thank you for subscribing and for sharing your precious minutes with me.
To my new paying patrons, I am incredibly delighted to have your generous support of the hours I pour into this little space I’ve carved for us in this ever-evolving world online.
I read somewhere on an old Monocle (when Tyler Brule was still editor-in-chief) that style reflects one’s personality. The late great New York fashion icon and American businesswoman Iris Apfel said, “Great style is an extreme curiosity about yourself” that cannot be bought— I tend to agree.
In today’s world, there’s so much pressure to conform, from what you eat to your workouts and routines, where you travel to, the events you attend, and the restaurants you frequent— the lines between you and trends can start to blur. Social media always gives you the impetus to be seen. Are you losing yourself to trends?
Nothing explains this better than the incredible domination of The Uniqlo Round Shoulder Bag. If you own one, fear not; I am not criticising you. I completely understand, and so do millions of other buyers worldwide— it’s even been dubbed the ‘Millenial Birkin.’
You can absolutely blame the brilliance and practicality of Japanese design—and let’s be honest, we all (secretly) love Uniqlo, even if it’s technically fast fashion.
Uniqlo’s Global Domination.
Between TikTok and the widespread presence of its stores, Uniqlo’s global domination is part fashion, part the proliferation of a mindset. While trying to find an article to explain this trend I had observed throughout my travels, I unexpectedly encountered a plethora of articles about this bag's international supremacy. (I am surprised Uniqlo and Supreme—the street brand—haven’t collaborated on this bag.)
