Why Gut Health is the pillar to overall health? | #THEHUE
An introduction to the frontiers of gut health and it's foundational role in overall well-being.

This week, I faced some unexpected physical challenges. I dealt with an upset stomach after consuming some less-than-fresh fish. Think churning stomach, miserable discomfort, overwhelming lethargy– and sincere moments of helplessness. Sound familiar?
The intrusive and sudden erosion of my gut is one of those small events in life, that can unexpectedly derail your week. Think back to the last time you shared a similar episode and I am sure you can relate to the inconveniences I was met with. Whether you’re spending hours hunched over the toilet or entertaining, let’s say, the other end of that unfortunate equation, we’ve all faced gut disturbances on some level. And let’s be honest– it’s anything but pleasant.
What continues to surprise me, whenever something similar happens is the profound impact my gut’s condition has on my overall well-being. It always catches me by surprise. On the surface, the gut’s role in the body’s vast framework seems minor. However, science now proves that gut health is the foundation of overall health. From your mental health to brain health and your immunity, the microorganisms in your gut communicate with every other cell in the body, so it’s a critical pillar to how your body and health operate.
While there’s an undeniable buzz around gut health these days, especially on social media and the web– if you’re anything like me, you've felt a mix of intrigue and overwhelm. While many– from influencers to medical professionals– share many tips and insights, the research keeps evolving, so it’s best to stay curious about your own fascination around the topic because the science goes far and wide. Gut health is not a trend, it’s the backbone of health.
It’s also perhaps really only on your mind when you’re thrown off balance by it. As it’s only when it’s out of sync, that you truly realise the gut’s role in your life health– and start to wonder how to better nurture it.
In the midst of my turmoil this week, I asked myself the question how can I support my gut’s thriving? How can I ensure it’s health? At its most basic, most professionals will agree that gut health equals overall health, so you are in fact what you eat, as the diversity in your gut microbiome is the key to a healthy gut.
But first, let’s define what the gut is. The gut is the gastrointestinal tract, starting from the mouth, leading into the digestive tract, and all the way down to the anus. Its primary responsibility is digestion. Yet, modern research suggests the gut isn’t merely a food processor.
The latest research spotlights the gut as the cornerstone of health. It houses a microbiome teeming with bacteria, fungi, and other vital microorganisms. These tiny entities impact everything– from our mental well-being and energy levels to brain function and immunity.
Interestingly, many physicians admit that their traditional medical training didn’t include learning about the link how nutrition and gut health impact on overall health. So if you’re keen on optimising your health, prioritising your understanding of gut health and how it impacts your health is paramount.
While I was tempted to try and elaborate on this topic myself, I empower you to dig into this topic through other more credible sources instead– as the details and complexities surrounding gut health are integral to holistic well-being, which are best understood through more authoritative and far superior experts to what I can explain myself. So, do invest time in these resources below, as they’ll lay the foundation for your understanding of this topic. I promise you it’s worthwhile!
The Science of Gut Health (& Why It Matters) | Ali Abdaal | YouTube
This is the best overview on the topic, especially if you aren’t familiar with what the gut is and what gut health is. It’s also interesting to hear Abdaal admit that while he was a medical student, he was never taught how nutrition impacts overall health. He thoroughly explains this topic by speaking to a nutrition expert and sharing practical tips on how to support your gut health.
Your Gut Microbiome: The Most Important Organ You’ve Never Heard Of | Erika Ebbel Angle | TEDxFargo | YouTube
Here’s a great scientific overview of why gut health is important to overall health. Angle goes through some important details on how the body benefits from a diverse gut microbiome. She also goes through some critical conclusions about how you are what you eat and how nutrition influences your overall health.
How to optimise your gut and brain bacteria | David Asprey | Big Think | YouTube
Asprey talks about the recent breakthroughs in the field, noting the increased classifications of bacteria that have helped to deepen our understanding of the human microbiome. His enthusiasm is evident, especially given its implications for the development of weight loss and holistic health. Echoing many experts, Asprey emphasizes the importance of enhancing gut diversity and talks about how he’s been able to achieve this. He also introduces the concept of prebiotics and how it can help your overall health.

From a nutritional perspective, this article provides the lowdown on how your diet can profoundly influence your gut health. Given the pivotal role we’ve established that gut health plays, consider this article as your essential guide to optimising health through gut-friendly nutrition practices.
I’d like to emphasize that these resources merely touch the tip of this vast iceberg. The discovery of the human microbiome emerged in the 1880s when Austrian paediatrician Theodor Escherich noticed variations in bacteria between intestinal samples of healthy children and those with diarrheal diseases (Britannica.com). This field of research is a dynamic domain that’s ever-blossoming with many mysteries yet to be unveiled, and it’s what makes it such a fascinating topic to dig into.
Understanding the pivotal role gut health plays in overall well-being is truly the wellspring of knowledge that I hope will catalyse a lifelong exploration into the captivating science that’s emerging in this field and how it impacts your overall health and well-being.
