Unwinding from the Fallacy of Comparison | #THINKINGHUES
Embracing Your Unique Journey. The variables that defines us renders any competition futile.
From the moment we begin our journey as children, we are immersed in a culture of comparison. It surrounds us in every aspect of life, from academic grades and the pursuit of graduating with the highest honours to achievements in other areas. We were led to believe, most of our lives, that competition was the ultimate path to satisfaction and a meaningful existence. But when we pause and examine the intricacies of competition and how it applies to daily life, we realise that it fosters a mindset of scarcity. By defining competition, we inadvertently tell ourselves that the world only exists in a black-and-white dichotomy between winners and losers, but that’s not how life actually works.
Most often, the competitions we fixate on perpetuate another myth– that there can only be one victor. However, this notion is primarily confined to the world of competitive sports, school rankings, and meaningless manmade awards. While often recognition holds prestige within the social hierarchy, it means nothing to our survival. In the real world, the one that exists beyond material and capitalistic values, the version that contains life and survival; the one that truly matters– life offers numerous opportunities for multiple winners to emerge. By embracing the principles of the infinite game, as pioneered by James P. Carse and popularized by Simon Sinek, we can dismantle the fallacy of competition and lose the depleting need for comparison. If our intent is to thrive as a species, collaborative elevation is what we should posture ourselves towards. As while the idea of survival of the fittest is ingrained in us, we must not also forget that we are inherently social animals who need each other to thrive.
Comparison breeds unhealthy pursuits and fosters self-doubt. However, if we shift our focus to drawing inspiration from the achievements of others, a spark is ignited within us, propelling us toward action. When comparison leads to competition, the intentions are often solely focused on winning at all costs, driven by the need to prove others wrong, validate our own worth, or seek external approval for our accomplishments. Such environments perpetuate a cycle of never feeling enough, as the comparison is a never-ending cycle that feeds into false illusions of what truly matters in life. It is the intention behind our actions that matters most.
What happens to all the money you’ve earned when your time in this world comes to an end? What value do all the wins and accomplishments you’ve accumulated hold when you are no longer here? From a young age, most of us have been conditioned to chase after excellence, gauge our worth based on external measures, and relentlessly pursue success at any expense. But where does this relentless pursuit ultimately lead us? It is no wonder that there is a profound movement to reconnect with our true selves and discover a deeper meaning in life.
At first, it may seem paradoxical to challenge the ingrained habit of competition, as it is deeply rooted in the way we’ve functioned for so long. From our earliest days in school, we were taught to strive for excellence, to outperform others. In the workplace, our performance is often evaluated based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and we are rewarded accordingly. In the world of business, we are trained to relentlessly pursue gains at the expense of our competitors (although this, I believe, is shifting dramatically). Rivalry and the never-ending race of comparison have become the very essence of our optimization.
In the age of social media, comparison extends far beyond the professional realm. We are inundated with carefully curated visuals of others’ seemingly flawless lives, triggering envy and discontent, at times multiple times a minute. The relentless temptation to compare ourselves arises as we endlessly scroll through these polished moments beyond our ability to control. It’s human nature to compare, as we can also learn by comparison, but our brains were not made to compare at this speed and volume.
Yet, let us pause and reflect on the vast global diversity that shapes each individual today. Our unique perspectives are forged by an array of experiences, environments, and cultural influences. No two humans are identical, neither are biological twins. Every event, moment, and insight contributes to the beautiful mosaic of our being.
Even if our upbringings, schools, friends, or even genetics were identical, subtle differences would alter the possibilities in our lives. We are the sum of our experiences, relationships, and perspectives, shaped by unforeseen insights. The variables that define our uniqueness render competition futile. The are no universal standards for a fulfilling life, and trying to live by someone else’s ideals misplaces our ambitions and creates a disconnect within.
Let us break free from the chains of comparison and celebrate our individuality. Embracing our unique perspectives empowers us to unlock untapped greatness and enrich the world with diverse viewpoints. Life is an infinite game, not a finite competition of winners and losers.
You hold the pen to your remarkable story, and your individuality is a catalyst for innovation. Embrace divergence and dare to play the infinite game. Within you is the capacity for genuine greatness, because the truest expression of yourself, your true genius only exists in you and no one else. To live beyond we must choose to embrace the limitless possibilities that await us, to rewire the narratives in our minds towards thriving.
