The Essence of What Makes Us Human | #THINKINGHUES
Unlocking the profound wisdom within, pondering the reliance on external guides, questioning the importance on reconnecting with nature, and contemplating the power of intuition.

In the midst of bustling city life, where the noise of human construction often drowns out nature, we find ourselves living in pursuit of the elusive. While the vibrancy of urban dwellings may captivate us, many of us feel the yearning for a deeper connection with ourselves, where intuition harmonises with the world beyond our modern conditioning. As city dwellers building lives filled with meaning and achievement, I can’t help but wonder why humans often need help to be human.
In our relentless quest for success, there are days when we flourish and exceed our wildest dreams, but there are also moments when doubts arise, challenges stifle, and self-sabotage clouds our path. We confront the grip of past traumas and wrestle with generational wounds that shape our mental well-being. We continue on our resilience to self-improve, but as society faces a rise in diseases and mental health crises, I question whether we have lost our way in pursuing progress at all costs.
As we forge ahead through technological advancements, it is clear that our brains and bodies have struggled to keep pace. Despite living in an era of abundance, the self-help industry thrives, hinting at a collective longing to better understand the complexities of our existence. While our intellect sets us apart from other species, it also reveals a perplexing capacity to hinder and undermine ourselves in ways not easily understood. Unlike most living creatures, who effortlessly navigate life through innate intuition and harmonious coordination with the natural world, we, as humans, often find ourselves lost and disoriented, even until our last breath.
Perhaps, like animals in the world, we were born with a profound sense of intuition, but the influence of our environment coerced and conditioned us to prioritise the wrong skills. Our modern way of life, driven by materialism, capitalism, industries, and technologies, may have detached us from our natural instincts, leaving us with a yearning to reconnect with our intuitive selves. Deep down, we sense a misalignment, yet we struggle to find the solution. While industries and years of learning offer guidance on navigating the constructed world we’ve created, other creatures effortlessly embody their purpose and behave without the need for external interventions. Ironically, we, as a species, are the ones who have intervened with that natural world the most, and yet, we seem the most disconnected from our natural ways.
In the hierarchy of living beings, we stand as the most empowered species, yet paradoxically, we find ourselves increasingly disconnected from the natural world. The Covid-19 pandemic served as a momentary pause, allowing us to witness the flourishing of nature, beautifully documented in the eye-opening documentary, ‘The Year Earth Changed’ (which I highly recommend watching). It is a reminder of the profound impact we, as a species, have on the environment and an invitation to reflect on our relationship with nature. The documentary inspires us to question the footprint in this world and to realign ourselves with the harmonious rhythm of the Earth, which all other living creatures seem to be attuned with.
Perhaps the time has come to unravel the mystery of our nature and question our reliance on external assistance to rediscover our intuition. In this profound journey of self-discovery, we must acknowledge the inherent power and wisdom that resides within us, urging us to align our lives with a purpose that transcends the mainstream.
Despite our position atop the hierarchy of living creatures, there is profound wisdom to gain from turning inwards into ourselves and outwards toward the natural world. Amidst the busyness and demands of modern life, carving out moments to reconnect with the instinctual harmony found in nature may hold the key to our liberation.
Maybe it is possible to embrace both our natural selves and the realities of our modern world and find real balance in both. By unlearning what we have been taught and embracing the essence of our humanity– leaning towards nature and reigniting our bond with our intuition, conceivably, we’ll land on a version of ourselves where we can truly thrive.
