HUE LETTERS

The lies we tell ourselves

Are far too many and how we can start to reframe the narratives that rules us.

Hi friends,

This past week one idea has been dominating my mind most: I realise, we need a new story for health and well-being.

Because when I look at the state of health in our world, clearly, the story we’ve been using hasn’t been working.

The lies we’ve been told are far and many,
I’d be a millionaire for every penny.

Health is wealth,
That’s impossible to argue,
But so few, of us,
Even when we try to be responsible,
Are aware of the level of disillusion?
Myself included.

I am still,
despite plenty of efforts,
under the guise of false beliefs,
caught in a labyrinth of deception, intertwined with biases,
caged under the weight of misinformation,
misguided, whether with or without intention,
harmful narratives perpetuated,
with or without our awareness,
cycled through, then brought to life again and again, for generations.

Oh the rage I feel, every time I uncover a truth,
imprisoned for decades, our minds are polluted,
poisoned through years of misinformation,
morale, profits, revenue driven incentives,
it’s our duty,
to use our reason,
it is our responsibility, not theirs,
to continue to question,
and hope to liberate our minds without hesitation.

On some level, we’re all still subjected to these disadvantaged conditions—
the modern world is not set up in our favor.

The irony is we’ve built a world, where our thriving is at risk,
whether due to misinformed beliefs or dated ambitions,
or perhaps the perfect storm of misaligned incentives,
circumstantial, contextual, conditional,
rarely malicious, mostly situational,
and yet we are caught, caged, and castrated,
corrupted by the ways of our world.

We need a new narrative,
we need a new story,
we need new priorities,
to create new opportunities,
to shift towards caring for the wholeness of the whole,
instead of constantly creating holes in the whole.

Somehow we need to return to the nature within us,
to reconnect with the nature beyond us is the goal.

It’s our collective responsibility,
to take matters into our hands,
to stay vigilant,
the sources of our resources,
stick with the facts, resist reactions,
sift through the evidence,
lean on the fundamentals,
to find our way back on the right side of truth.

I wish truth was a given,
I wish truth was driven,
But, let’s be real,
in our world today,
truth is taken for granted.

Resilience is required,
every shift is acquired,
we need to fight the good fight together—as one,
as absolutes are nonsensical,
all things are adaptable,
ponder the controversial,
then find our own way back to truth.

Given the situation,
we must continue to fight the good fight,
together and alone,
this is the non-negotiable,
we need to find our own way back to the right side of truth;
yet it’s also the ultimate collective effort,
that requires our immediate attention.

Despite the abundance of health information, why do we still fall into the traps of self-defeating beliefs?

Self-limiting beliefs are like viruses—they infiltrate our minds in clusters, each one reinforcing the next. Fueled by misinformation, the more we allow these beliefs to take root, the more intertwined and connected they become to unroot.

Even in my mind, despite everything I’ve learned and unlearned, none of us are immune to these misguided traps. It’s no one’s fault really, but this is why we need a new narrative for health and well-being.

Through recent conversations—and firsthand experience—I’ve seen how powerful these debilitating storylines can be.

The good news is, we always have neuroplasticity and a growth mindset on our side to rewire our way away from these self-limiting beliefs.

Here are some examples of the harmful beliefs I’ve encountered recently—ones we can hopefully eliminate out of our mind forever:
