On Retail: The Independent Multi-Label Store

Retail reimagined, a global guide to some of my favourites.

It’s refreshing to see independent multi-label/brand stores continue to thrive worldwide. While not a new phenomenon, these concept stores breathe new life into why it’s fun to shop IRL and in-store.

Unfortunately, often to the detriment of my wallet. But, I love finding these gems! While some are scattered in unexpected locations, tucked in unassuming buildings, or nestled in neighbourhoods where pedestrians wander. Others reside in traditional retail areas but with curation and spaces that’ll surprise or delight in some way.

Either way, each will leave a lasting impression, but I think that’s the point. While some are intentional concentrations of local brands, others are a showcase of local artisanal crafts and atypical souvenirs, or simply a fine curation of the world's best. Fashioning the unconventional, off-piste, or pleasant rarities the experience itself reminds me of the joy of browsing.

Yet, no matter the focus, these multi-label/brand stores are the modern vision of department stores distilled into intimate clusters of the beloved boutique experience.

Concept stores defy convention by catering to modern shoppers who seek the thrill of discovery. Breaking free from the constraints of tradition, they craft deliberate, immersive, and sometimes aspirational moments—blurring art, culture, curation, design, and commerce to offer more than the typical shopping experience.

If this sounds like your jam, here are some of my favourites from around the world:

0KM in Da’an District, Taipei.

Housed in a Japanese colonial-era wooden townhouse, this multi-purpose space celebrates culture, creativity, academia, design, and industry—and is managed by the Forestry Bureau and Conservation Administration.

I was too immersed at the moment, with my cousins, to capture any good photos of the space, but I did manage to take this one (below), which shows off a little of the vibe of the store.

Situated in a quiet corner of the bustling Jaan neighbourhood, it focuses on outdoor, camping, and nature themes while offering an eclectic selection beyond these categories. Though officially classified as a museum due to its heritage status, the repurposing of the space seamlessly integrates a Japanese-style café, concept store, and exhibition rooms amid lush landscaping, blending old-world charm with contemporary design.

Mercado48 in Porto, Portugal.

This is still one of my favourite browsing experiences. It’s a library of artisanal craft amongst other trinkets, so be prepared to be decisive because there will be a lot of deliberating once you’ve walked through its cosy nooks.

Their collection of ceramics and locally-produced illustrations were my favourites. I immediately fell in love with a lot of them. There were so many unique finds, that I was struggling hard with indecision. The store’s theme was local artisanal crafts which shine through every chosen piece, making it the ideal spot for meaningful mementoes of Porto.

Smitten with these ceramics. They’re on Instagram too, by the way.
