In the health and wellness worlds, there’s a persistent myth that salads, chicken breasts, and kale are the pinnacle of nutrition. Sure, they’re nutritious foods, but a diverse diet offers much more. Diverse whole foods and spices aren’t just good for your palate; they’re also great for your health. Often, it’s the preparation and additional ingredients that clutter the nutritional value of the whole ingredients that can make certain foods problematic.

Recently, while browsing Instagram, I came across a prominent Asian fitness influencer showcasing her weekly meal prep: quinoa, jars of overnight oats, and delicious vegetable soup. All delicious and nutritious choices, without a doubt, but it got me thinking– why was she, who’s rooted in Asian culture and who resides in Asia, only focused on eating a primarily Western diet? I was taken back to my former beliefs, a time when I too had falsely believed that eating healthy meant salads, chicken breasts, and avocados.

Why does the internet’s version of a healthy meal lean heavily on quinoa, overnight oats, kale, and kombucha?
