The surge of information on the internet, amplified by the whirlwind of social media platforms, has stoked humanity’s infatuation with sensationalism. The lure of virality often prioritises attention over accuracy, casting doubt on the authenticity of widespread information.

In this unprecedented digital age, established media no longer holds a monopoly on knowledge dissemination. We grapple with the fact that unchecked platforms might eclipse traditional sources, diluting our once steadfast foundation of truth. This isn’t just an issue for politicians or conspiracy theorists; health, fitness, and wellness are topic areas that are at equal risk too. Before absorbing digital content, always ask: how credible is the source? Diversify your information sources and fact-check diligently— like your life depends on it!

Should you trust a nutrition tip from a famous influencer who has no formal credentials?

Or believe a ‘transformational’ workout trend to yield identical results for you as it has for a random stranger on the Internet? Would you seek medical advice from an unqualified individual in the event of an illness, or should you consult with a trained professional? Honestly, the answer to these questions isn’t as straightforward as you may think.

While your instinct might urge you to trust information from established institutions or figureheads, what sometimes often gets overlooked, especially when authority comes into play is that some of these establishments are rooted in dated ideologies or have complicated incentives motivating them to share certain perspectives. But with the abundance of information, the pull of incentives, cannot be ignored. Even with scientific evidence, the influence of capitalistic motives, ego-driven decisions, and short-sightedness has nurtured an information environment where some research benefactors often have vested interests, which fosters a cycle of biases that may masquerade as objective truths.

The reality is this, we exist in a time where the boundaries between truth, conspiracy, and speculation have, in some realms disappeared, and discerning reality and facts become a real challenge. Though a very important task indeed! Ultimately, with the evidence available to support a myriad of viewpoints, your personal discernment of varied reputable sources becomes your truest compass.

Alternatively, also consider the limits of human learning, whether as individuals or in groups, humans have an upper ceiling to what they’re able to know. Such limitations or blindspots create inherent biases, not out of malice, but more as a reflection of human nature.
