When you think of yourself, do you ever consider your body at its microscopic level? Do you ever wonder how your cells interact as you move about your day? Have you ever asked how your brain communicates with the rest of your body? Are you ever curious about how the pale pinkish mushy goop sitting in your skull, right now, accounts for all the complexities that keep you alive?
From moving your typing fingers to sustaining your breath while you’re asleep, to processing facts to sensory stimulation, to storing memories or eradicating useless information? Do you marvel at how your brain’s soft grooves and its smooth ridges of synapses, neurons, and neural pathways somehow miraculously result in language and your well-formed opinions? What about how your consciousness intermingles with all of this? Your brain is brilliant! Contained within your cranium, essential to your daily survival, but yet, its intricate operations mostly go unnoticed.
Survive, Thrive, and Optimise.
While some wonder about the open skies and distant universes in space, the inner workings of human beings and how you and I, survive, thrive, and optimise is what peaks my interest most. I wonder why things are the way they are in us. I ask questions like how my thoughts come to be, or how I know if what I am experiencing is real.
Sometimes I drift to asking questions like, whether happiness is even real or is it an imagined ideal? Where do such ideas originate from? Are we chasing a phantom or are we facing inevitable disappointment for the mere chance to flirt with deep contentment? Is the glory of succeeding an illusion to keep us going or is it worth the strife?
The older I get, the more I realise, that many musings will play out in the mind. If you consider the collective contemplations that span humanity now, in the past, and into the future, there is a sense of expanse in the totality of cognitive processes. Yet, even with the advancements in technology and science, the mystery of the brain and the mind endures.
