High on HIIT
The science to why I am addicted to the most exquisite kind of misery
It’s a little sadistic.
Kind of crazy, when you pause to think about it.
But, it’s also, widely loved—and revered.
A cocktail of adrenaline, endorphins, serotonin and dopamine; who can resist?
That tightness in my chest, the exhilaration in my bones, and the desperation clasping my lungs—making it feel almost claustrophobic.
My sympathetic nervous system activating a sudden cascade of reactions: a racing heart, heavy breaths, blood vessels dilating, and the gush of nutrients and oxygen extorting my veins.
In that constricted window, when my brain starts to question—'is this what a heart attack feels like?'—in that heightened moment, where everything suddenly crystallizes—visceral and acute—everything else seems to melt away as the body gives way to nature's brilliance.
There’s no better feeling, in my opinion.
Teetering between collapse and triumph, flirting at that edge of capacity, my fans flare, as my nervous system ignites—my heart races, my cells fire up— guaranteed a cellular transformation.
A burst of endorphins and endocannabinoids floods my brain, bringing relief and release and introducing a sense of tranquil euphoria.
Knowing I’ve pushed my body so far to its edge, my mind is suddenly sharp, hyper-aware, yet also calm. I bask in earned elation; it’s hard to put into words.
