Break Free from Conformity | #THINKINGHUES
Moving beyond your sense of belonging, to rewire society's narratives, and embrace your most authentic life.

In a world that pressures us to conform, the importance of embracing your authentic self often gets drowned out. From a young age, we’ve been conditioned to believe that being true to ourselves is a risk that invites judgment and isolation. Society imposes fixed ideals on how you should live and how you should be, perpetuating limiting beliefs that confine you to cultural expectations and societal parameters of what you can be and how you should be, to be accepted.
From the days of sitting in the classroom and raising your hand to the ideas of valuing your worth through the amount in your bank account, there are some stories that’s been implanted in you and it’s likely not yours. Whether intentional or not, whether through personal networks or through Hollywood films and other media, there’s a dominant dictation to the life you’re meant to live.
But it’s time to break free from these predetermined constraints and acknowledge your own reality. While humans are social creatures who naturally seek to belong, our world has evolved into a globalised existence, providing us with the opportunity to explore beyond our immediate environments– even through virtual realms. To prioritise self-expression over conformity is not selfish, it’s the aim that’ll bring progress to our world and humanity. Perhaps, nowadays, belonging is also within the unique modern circumstance of our hyper-connected world. We’re able to cast a wider net on which community we choose to belong. Our immediate environment is not the limit.
For too long, self-imposed limiting beliefs are often what holds you back from achieving the life you’ve been dreaming about. Generations of hardwired conditioning of manmade rules will try to keep you living within an imaginary ideal. But, think critically for yourself and break free from such limitations where necessary. Stay vigilant on loving yourself and others, and be generous with the space to invest in who you truly are because the best gift you can give to yourself is to exist as your most authentic self.
Separate from the expectations of others, devoid of what society values, there’s a version of you that doesn’t have to follow what everyone else wants of you. If you’ve suffered from a sense of longing, a feeling like you’re not exactly in the right place, a sense of perpetual searching, then perhaps you’re living a life that’s misaligned. That somehow in the ether of this wide existence, there’s a version of you who’s waiting to be uncovered. The version of you who’s unafraid to showcase your brilliance. The version of you who’s unbothered by a need to fit in.
The greatest news is, with social media and the pace of information around, stay curious to find the many individuals who have bravely stepped out of their comfort zones to live differently and more authentically. As seeing is believing, the others who are already inspiring progress are the ones to study because they’re the ones forwarding humanity as a whole. The message today here is clear, know that you never have to suppress yourself for the sake of belonging, instead fearlessly embrace the version of yourself you’ve contemplated, you’ve excavated, and the one that’s been calling out to you for so long! Because the world has space for you.
As a species, we have gone far beyond our hunter-gatherer or tribal structures. Our collective pasts of intellectual liberations like the Renaissance, the internet age that continues to captivate the world, and the current awakening of self-healing and self-empowerment have transitioned us into a world of open possibilities– one that’s globalised. In one sense also homogenised to the ideas we are exposed to but also more aware of the limitless possibilities available. Such a world, where information is rapidly transmitted, widespread, and widely adopted, is a world that gives you more space to pursue your individuality. Maintaining the universal truth of love for yourself and others, and of never harming another, you are free to explore beyond past confinements to pursue a life that’s more authentic to your heart’s desires.
This matters because I believe if more of us can live authentically as ourselves and do the things that sparks joy most of our lives, the world will become a better place. Because individuals who are free to exist as themselves, doing things that spark joy will naturally be motivated to create a better world for themselves and others. The ripple effect of such change transforms the trajectory for future generations. This is why such transformation is important and needs to begin with the individual.
It’s not the heights of your achievements that define you after death, but the authenticity with which you’ve lived your life that truly matters because you’re the only one who experiences your life for you. The tragedy would be if you get to the end of your life, having pursued someone else’s goals and ideals, beaming with unfulfilled dreams and ambitions in your soul– that perpetuate a state of ‘what ifs.’
Every person has a vision for their life. It’s that dream that’s always gnawing at you whenever you have a moment to sit still. It’s the one that’s always with you, waiting within you. But be kind, because it’s years of conditioning hammered into us from the day we took our first breath that you’re fighting against and often misleads us into decades of confusion. Today, as you silence the noise and tune into yourself, ask yourself, what is your soul calling you to?
