In The School of Greatness: 5 Things Holding You Back From Achieving Your Dreams w/ Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi, Lewis Howes converses with Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi about the hindrances that stop us from achieving our dreams.
Heng Yi suggests that due to life’s many distractions, such as the mindless occupation of our time, these diversions become the default input that fills our ‘cup’— which then prevents us from discovering our true essence. The key here, is to empty that cup, eliminate the noise, and ground ourselves in the present instead.
One of our chief roadblocks these days is our discomfort in restlessness, which tempts us to flit from one thing to another, which leads us to never sink below the surface of our pursuits. This lack of depth can stifle our growth. Yet, by connecting with our inner truth and expressing our truest potential, we can overcome these barriers.
Should you seek wisdom, this hour-long episode is rich with insight and full of mantras to adopt. But, the main takeaway I left with, is how “for every person, there’s the right time,” so, “there’s nothing to hurry, there’s nothing to worry” about, because you’re always on your own timeline.
There’s a certain gut-punch quality to Glennon Doyle’s 2020 book: UNTAMED. In a year that felt like an unyielding storm against us, Doyle’s messages of empowerment and self-discovery rose above the waves.
Doyle’s honest storytelling is a courageous act of opening up, unfiltered, bearing her flaws and all with candid vulnerability. “Untamed” is less a book and more a call to readers, beckoning us to seize hold of our wild, untamed selves, urging us to live life on our terms.
While UNTAMED might find its core audience among women, the essence of its story is universal: it’s a testament to what showing up authentically means. It’s the empowerment of the authentic self and a rallying cry for everyone to let loose their wild untamed spirits, that are often suppressed in the name of acceptance, culture, and expectation. It’s a call to arms for us to chase our passions relentlessly, without reservation or regrets— because lessons are meant to be learnt along the way.
There are encounters that linger in our minds, refusing to fade and Kassy King’s designs are one such experience for me. Realised during a wander through Melbourne’s Fitzroy neighbourhood, known for its eclectic mix of bohemian vibes, edgy fashion, and laidback F&B establishments, King’s creations stood out.
Her audacious use of colours and whimsical patterns screamed a liveliness that’s hard to miss and lured me to appreciate its handcrafted artistry. Each piece King crafts is not décor, but it’s appropriate as a standalone piece of art that doubles as fantastic homeware. Breathing life into the mundane, transforming the ordinary into fantastical imaginations.
If you’re keen to infuse your living spaces with a dash of colour, or keen to make a bold statement at home, Kassy King’s creations should be on your radar. A scroll through her Instagram will clue you into what I mean.
There’s a special kind of alchemy that happens when vivacious colours collide with unabashed eccentricity— and Reza Hasni’s a wizard of visuals. His work is an entrancing brew of symmetry, animated illustrations, and tufting experimentations, which seems to capture a sense of magic that’s impossible to ignore.
His art dances beyond simple visual appeal, diving into an immersive experience that reels you in and refuses to let your eyes go. The shapes, the subjects, the colours, the interactions between the many symbols and subjects he depicts— each piece feels like a riddle that unravels deeper the more you observe. Hasni’s work seems to have this elusive quality of sparking an intrinsic resonance within, a stirring that feels like a little peak into the artist’s soul.
A scroll through his Instagram page, you’ll have a glimpse of the versatility of his pieces, whether his art is on a t-shirt or gracing a wall, every interaction feels like a brush with authenticity, a testament to his raw, unrestrained expressions. It’s an exhilarating journey to witness him explore new artistic terrains, charting untravelled paths. His artistry, pulsating with palpable genuineness, is a true celebration of creative mastery.
This tune has been my constant companion for weeks on end now, wrapping me up in its dreamy rhythm and inspiring lyrics. Don’t Give Up by Groove Armada is the auditory shot of enthusiasm that effortlessly brings a spring to my step. It feels like a warm embrace, an illumination emerging from within that spills over to my day.
This piece of music isn’t just a song; it’s a mood, a vibe perfect for those languid, sun-drenched weekends by the pool or under the kaleidoscopic sky. But if you’re not in the mood for sentimentality, worry not. I’ve curated an eclectic blend of other equally compelling tunes, ready to set the backdrop for your day, waiting for you on my Spotify page. There’s a playlist for almost every whim and wish, so sway away, and simply lose yourself to the music. Enjoy!
"...people are not just created abstractly, they are solving problems and if the problems don't lead to satisfactory new problems then they'll turn to something else, the thing only stays interesting when solving a problem leads to a better problem…" – David Deutsch
This quote couldn’t have come to me at a better time. Think of this as an invitation, not a challenge to echo the natural flow of life. Urging us to evolve, to take life head-on, to constantly pursue the joy to solve better problems, for they are the ones to keep life exciting.
If you’re going through a period of transition, or if change whispers in your ears, let these words spark the wisdom you seek. Don’t hold back, waiting for that perfect moment to strike— as life is way too short to wait to live your best life. Time is fleeting, so jump in, and embrace the thrill of the present.
We only get this one life to live, so let’s make it extraordinary.
