THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS:
Rethinking with Adam Grant: ChatGPT did NOT title this podcast discusses the pivotal horizons humanity is forced to embrace as Ai technologies, like ChatGPT, are let loose for public use.
‘The Beginning of Infinity’ is a humbling yet inspirational reflection on the vastness of human potential juxtaposed against the backdrop of existing as a species occupying occupying one planet, in a myriad of galaxies.
ChatGPT and the Poe app will transform your level of productivity. Its speed and simplicity are remarkable to witness.
Beeple is the digital artist who broke records for the $69.3 million sale at Christie’s, though does this validation mark the start of the AI art revolution and growth of digital art?
Ever heard of a technology that won over a million users in five days? Welcome to the world of ChatGPT, the tech marvel shaking up our world. If it feels like an enigma to you or you’re intrigued by its potential, tune into ‘Rethinking with Adam Grant: ChatGPT did NOT title this podcast,’ a conversation on the pivotal horizons this moment in human history is.
Grant, AI entrepreneur Allie Miller, and Professor Ethan Mollick unravel the many facets of this game-changer. I confess it’s still somewhat of a maze to me too, but this is why it’s fuelling my curiosity. While Grant’s scepticism calls out its AI compatriot for spilling out ‘pseudo-profound BS,’ Mollick affirms its value as a ‘general purpose companion,’ while Miller reminds us the tool is not without its limitations, especially considering how the consumer-facing version is in its infancy and existing only with training data up to 2021. The three probe into issues of trust, misuse, and authenticity amidst the explosion of AI-generated content. But the era of Ai, from this year onwards, is an everlasting shift in the trajectory of humanity. Trust me when I say this, you will start to see Ai integrations adopted by most software very soon.
Even as we stand on the shoulders of immense innovations, breakthroughs in space travel, and AI chatbots, David Deutsch asks in ‘The Beginning of Infinity,’ a humbling question— do our inventions matter in the grand canvas of the universe? Early on, Deutsch establishes how human knowledge, innovation, and our ability to understand the universe are the ‘beginnings of infinity',’ meaning they have the potential for unlimited growth.
He claims that, unlike any other species on Earth, humans have the unique ability to create theories to explain how we see the world, which allows us to further innovate and refine our understanding of the world. He makes a clear point: leaps in humanity’s progress depend on dynamic societies that embrace change and innovation, that in turn allows for the beginning of infinity.
Deutsch's philosophical approach to quantum mechanics is a refreshing exploration of the wider reaches of human progress. While, as a species, we live in the context of the universe at large, only occupying one planet, in a myriad of galaxies— yet, it’s undeniable that our potential is immense. I am still on chapter three of this book, but even as I make my way through, I know this enchanting read is one not to miss.
Simultaneously awed and apprehensive, I stand on the precipice of a future sculpted by AI and marvels like ChatGPT. Amongst these technological wonders, the Poe app is also worth your attention. This swift AI chat tool offers a gateway to an array of chatbots, an ensemble to test with the task of generating simple CSS code for a webpage. What’s incredible is how each bot’s distinct responses provide an enlightening glimpse into the wide breadth of knowledge, data, and applications this innovation covers.
Yes, it’s the app’s remarkable speed and simplicity that truly underscores its potential for widespread adoption. I can’t say this enough. This is a pivotal moment in our world’s history— a metamorphosis is occurring at a rapid pace, spurred by these early stages of the AI revolution. The question that lingers though, I wonder, is what are the long-term effects of these advancements, especially in regard to ethical considerations.
Continuing our deep dive into the awe-inspiring realm of cutting-edge technology, one cannot overlook the seismic ripples created by digital artist Beeple. Though he is not an Ai artist, his art certainly mirrors the dynamism and style of the ever-evolving landscape of Ai art.
Thrusted into the limelight of the NFT craze in 2021, when his digital artwork shattered records when it sold for $69.3 million at Christie’s. With a multi-million-dollar sale at the esteemed Christie’s auction house— a first for digital artistry, more artists and hopefuls turn to AI tools to craft their digital masterpieces, as a heated debate simmers beneath the surface. Will AI usurp human artistry, or can we find harmony between the strokes of an artist’s brush and the codes of algorithmic creations?
But, amidst the raging debate, Beeple stands apart, continually reshaping the contours of digital artistry. His work imbued with innovation and satirical jabs, provides a thought-provoking commentary on the dizzying evolution of powerful figures, tech titans, and the visages that command them.
His often dystopian imageries pose a silent, yet pointed question: when it comes to the shadows of the art world, where do we draw the line? As we stand on the edge of the future of art, and what it means to be an artist, Beeple’s art and record-breaking sale forces us to pay attention to the clear evolution ‘art’ is enduring.
In sync with our celebration of innovation, let’s spotlight an artist who’s been ahead of the curve: Gramatik. He took an early leap into the world of music NFTs. So, to honour such progressive and brave strides, I offer you a sonic 'treat— Muy Tranquilo Spanish for “as calm as a,” is a soothing modern instrumental track that has been a comforting companion over the years since its release. If this chilled-out melody doesn’t quite strike a chord, worry not. My Spotify page is brimming with playlists and tunes across genres to match your every mood.
Reflecting on the innovative leaps and bounds we’ve travelled through this week, I leave you with perhaps a slightly provocative question, that keeps tugging at my thoughts: how do you envision the long-term implications of AI in our world today and tomorrow? What about in the next half-decade or decade? Does the advent of AI spark exhilaration or apprehension? Why so?
These are the questions poised to linger for generations, as we stand on the brink of the AI era, still in the nascent stages of its consumer-facing emergence. Let’s for a minute, think back to our collective naivety around the far-reaching impacts of social media when it was first unfurled to the public. Who could’ve foreseen the birth of a vibrant creator and influencer economy, or the surprising sway it holds over public opinion, even influencing election outcomes in multiple countries around the globe? It took us the better part of a decade to grasp the full magnitude of these changes, but even as the product endures, we are tasked with the challenging task of adapting to technology and a product that’s always evolving.
With random app updates, commanded to you, by a distant team of a handful of humans (especially in comparison to the scale of the human population), what unforeseen consequences might we be unknowingly ushering with AI tools like ChatGPT? How much are we in the dark about the repercussions of our creations? Surely, the upshot of social networks has been largely positive, but let’s not gloss over the less savoury, often unseen impacts they’ve also solicited in our world today.
Though, this is what we humans do. Our brilliance continues to surpass our wildest imaginations. As we venture into unchartered territory, blind spots and new horizons are expected. This duality is as thrilling as it is disconcerting, casting a fascinating tension between fear and excitement, perhaps this is what and how, as Deutsch pointed out— the beginning of infinity feels like. A dynamic certainty worth pursuing, would you say?
