Dr Matthew Walker, a renowned sleep expert, Founder and Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science, and scientist and Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley; reminds us of how “sedation is not sleep.” As he explains, alcohol, contrary to popular belief, is detrimental to quality sleep. He underlines his research and the crucial role of restorative sleep— for memory, learning, and emotional regulation, in this clip from the Huberman Lab podcast. His insights might make you reconsider that nightcap, but it’s a small price to pay for a better night’s sleep!
The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer, author Steven Kotler shares not only strategies for peak performance but also candid accounts of self-sabotage and personal trials. This accessible read captivates with its blend of triumphs, self-reflections, and emphasis on the power of intrinsic motivation for long-term success.
It is a reminder, that while humans are imperfect, we are also boundlessly capable, of continually pushing the boundaries of our potential— unsurprisingly predicated on our ability to tap into the capacity of our mind and body. This exploration of self-optimisation and peak performance fuels an ever-expanding discovery of human potential.
Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, comes Repleat, a brand offering an artisanal, fashionable, and unique collection of water-resistant, made-to-order polypropylene bags. These statement pieces not only express femininity but also offer practicality for those of us living in unpredictable tropical climates. Whether as a gift or a personal treat, the palm leaf bag, in particular, is an enviable choice.
At Bali’s Arma Museum in Ubud, I was captivated by I Nyoman Meja’s 1990 painting, “Kecak Dance.” While depicting a traditional Balinese scene, of Hindu dance, said to have been inspired by an ancient ritual called Sanghyang— a form of exorcism to repel evil spirits and where dancers fall into a trance— Meja’s work leaves a unique imprint. His distinct use of neon shadows illuminates his subjects and infuses luminous energy in his paintings, which reflects the vivid glow of a warning fire— a key feature of these ritualistic traditional dances. His clever technique honours the legacy of the style, yet breathes new life by way of dimensionality to a flat depiction of a familiar scene, resulting in a unique and memorable piece.
