A Millennial's Guide to Deep Thinking
An introduction to the art of thinking about thinking.
Have you ever caught yourself thinking about thinking? I love to think about thinking.
As a self-proclaimed millennial’s philosopher, I often think about thinking a lot. Before I knew what to call it, before I competed my degree, my mind was always— philosophising.
Philosophise: the act of engaging in philosophical thinking, discussion, or speculation.
It’s not the most practical use of my time, but I can’t help myself. Deep analytical thinking about fundamental questions and ideas of the world is a habit I cannot shake.
I’ve realise not everyone thinks about thinking and existence as intensely as I do sometimes. Many of my daydreams are filled with contemplations on existential questions around morals, purpose, meaning, ethics, knowledge, human nature, and all that falls in between.
Why are we on this rotating planet in the middle of this vast dark universe, amongst other planets, while orbiting a giant star, the sun? What is our ultimate purpose? What is a life well-lived? Do you believe in aliens? I am undecided on this matter.
I know, I can be a little (or a lot) intense. While I used to feel embarrassed, now I feel empowered. Deep thinking is my natural state. There are many more whys still to entertain; I am still bursting with an eternal cascade of “whys.”
The older I get, I realise that thinking about thinking is entertainment to my mind. It’s something I’ll always do with or without an audience. But, today, I am grateful to share some of my thoughts with you.

So, let’s think about thinking!
The stories in our minds shapes our version of reality because the narratives in our minds are the only versions of reality we’ll really know. What is your mind telling you about yourself today? What recurring thoughts do you notice? Are you feeling positive, negative, neutral, or indecisive about yourself today?
The mind is flexible. It can be triggered by random things at any given moment. But, in the same moment, we also have the power to shift our thoughts. Are your thoughts helping you in your day today? Are the things you’re thinking about adding value or draining you today?
If we practice a growth mindset we can stay open to the possibilities that are waiting for us. What happens when you choose to believe in yourself? What opportunities will you spot today?
