“If we can change our stories, then we can change our lives,” Lori Gottlieb. This quote is an insightful summary of the golden nuggets of wisdom you can expect in this episode of How to Be a Better Human: How Changing Your Story Can Change Your Life, which goes in-depth about how powerful the mind’s narration can be in our actual experience.
None of us are immune to the negativity that sometimes lingers, but Lori Gottlieb and Chris Duffy share some practical tips on how best to navigate your way out of an unforgiving mind. As a seasoned psychotherapist, Gottlieb has years of experience working with a diverse selection of people. One humbling truth prevails, while multiple perspectives always exist, you are always looking through a subjective lens and is why the story you tell yourself matters.
I love how Gottlieb reminds us to look inwards first, before trying to control the behaviour of another or the situation outside of us. Often, the transformation in how you perceive life is rooted in the stories you internalise. You may be inclined to try and control the situation or blame others, but the real remedy is in the narrative that governs your thoughts. Throughout the episode, she furnishes valuable insights and actionable guidance that will help you to reshape your approach to how best to support your mind. She also gives a great context for what therapy is and why it can be helpful.
Red Bull might be the name that first comes to mind when you think of energy drinks, but if you take a closer look, it seems like there’s a fresh brand popping up every year in this wildly popular category. Each claiming a unique selling point, often presenting themselves as a “healthier alternative.” The energy drink sector is thriving, yet it prompts a questions: Why do we feel the need for additional energy in the first place?
In All About Energy Drinks by Precision Nutrition writer Ryan Andrews asks this very question. He asserts that if you maintain a balanced diet, enjoy adequate rest, and sleep well, there’s little reason why you need additional sources of energy.
The article ventures into the intricacies of the energy drink industry, examining everything form its origins to the controversies surrounding its ingredients. This exploration isn’t just for those with enthusiasm for these beverages, but Andrews raises universally relevant questions around lifestyle choices and their implication on health and longevity. His insights provide great knowledge that help to prioritise well-being.
Warning, I was hooked from the very first crunch, so this recommendation is likey to insight an obsession in you. Introducing Mamame Tempeh Chips: a combination of texture and flavour so delicious, it’s highly addictive.
Healthier than your average potato chip, and “100% Gluten free, vegan, and plant-based,” they’re made of fermented black-eyed beans, lentils, and chia seeds, as their website claims. Cooked in coconut oil, these chips offer a nutritious and tasty alternative.
The chili variant is my favourite so far, but their original is a flavourful delight as well. While I never get this excited about a vegan snack before, this on will be a staple to my pantry for the foreseeable future. If you live in Singapore, they’re available at Little Farms.
Boree Hur, a South Korean Seoul-based artist, truly makes my heart fly. Stirring something profound, particularly given my deep fondness of flowers, her artwork marked by hyper-realistic and vibrant interpretations blooms vividly.
From the colours to the dynamic movement captured, Hur’s art brings new life and refreshing energy into an otherwise simple subject. Her ability to enhance a timeless object of beauty into a novel magnificence sheds light on the artistry she evokes through every stroke. With undeniable elegance she elevates radiance and new appreciation for my true love for flowers.
Include a handful or two of a variety of raw nuts in your snacking routine. We all love a good snack, but not all snacks are made equal. So, why not do your body a favour and snack on things that truly add value?
More than an alternative source of protein, nuts are a great source of a variety of nutrients, and antioxidants and can help to lower cholesterol, so the next time you feel peckish, have a healthy hand of mixed raw nuts to satiate that munch; and perhaps, a few bites of tempeh chips to round out your snacking too ;).

We’ve all been in a moment where self-doubt is through the roof. You feel like everyone’s eyes are on you and you are scared to make your next move. In these moments, it often feels like the world around you is falling into you.
But in truth, although it can feel this way, it is also very likely that the only person worrying is you. People have plenty of other things in their own lives to think and worry about. So, even if the world feels small, like it’s falling on you, consider the vastness of the universe. It’s more likely people are thinking about their own lives over yours. While you are the main character in your mind, you aren’t everyone’s protagonist.
So don’t try and self-sabotage yourself from living the life you desire. Pursue the dreams you been envisioning, keep moving forward, and realise that you only have yourself to answer to. Everyone else’s judgements or opinions don’t need to matter, if you don’t let it interrupt your conviction toward your own life and visions.
Ben Böhmer’s Begin Again album became my refuge in the darkest days of lockdown. Time and time, again, as I revisit it, it reaffirms the immense gratitude I feel for life’s simple pleasures. Reminding me each time, to appreciate the freedom we once took for granted.
Every track on this album feels like it was composed to elevate spirits. Whether you listen through its audio magic or witness it through what I consider as one of the most outstanding online set videos ever, Begin Again is the album to infuse joy and motivation in you this weekend.
But, if this isn’t your mood this week, I have plenty of playlists across multiple genres on my Spotify page to accompany you through every moment this weekend.
