On the Path with Ryan Roslansky, Kickstarter CEO Everette Taylor on why work-life balance and empathy matter in your career features a conversation about what it means to be a great leader. Taylor never saw himself as someone who would end up leading a global tech giant, yet his persistence transformed his modest beginnings into the right combination to achieve his heights of success in business and in life.
Beyond just being a corporate figurehead, Taylor is the epitome of a true entrepreneur. Characterised by his tenacity, appetite for risks, and empathy, he has street smarts and a work ethic that is a marker of his great success.
At Kickstarter, work-life harmony is a pillar of their success. The team follows a four-day workweek, reserving Fridays for the time of rejuvenation. Contrary to popular belief and the glorification of hustle culture, there’s growing recognition of how well-rested employees will perform better. This conversation is nothing short of an inspiration.
Why I Don’t Read Modern-Day Journalism by The Elysian, is an article everyone needs to read. It touches on topics that are crucial towards humanity’s collective future. Though my statement may feel exaggerated, in media, what we often overlook is how content plays a major part in moulding our perception.
Authored by a seasoned American journalist, The Elysian’s piece provides a poignant and discerning look at the pitfalls of current media and its forgotten impacts on our mental well-being.
Over the past decade or so, the gradual transition from credible journalism to an era dominated by clickbait translates to an evolution that is moving at a pace no human can really keep up with. The incentives media outlets and journalists are forced to abide by are therefore jeopardised.
Elle Griffin offers a compelling strategy to steer clear of the overwhelming tide of pessimistic news, as the unfortunate reality is that shocking or negative news often attracts the most attention; and as more attention equals more revenue, the industry is caught in a difficult dilemma. I’ve also left a comment, that’s worth a browse.
I’ve recently been obsessed with contrast therapy, a regimen that combines infrared sauna with ice baths. While the physical experience may seem intense, these sessions are also a focal point for recovery, mental fortitude, and overall vitality.
The post-session highs— of elevated dopamine— are indeed very real. But the unparalleled sense of rejuvenation is also transformative and addictive.
From a scientific perspective, contrast therapy optimises changes in blood circulation. Immersion in a hot sauna triggers vasodilation, where blood vessels expand and pores open. Conversely, cold exposure induces vasoconstriction, where pores and blood vessels narrow. Both these alterations enhance blood flow, muscle oxygenation and nutrient circulation.
However, it’s important to consult with a medical professional, as there’s never a one-size-fits-all approach, especially if you have an underlying risk for heart disease. Click the links for a deeper dive into the benefits of sauna and the benefits of cold immersion.
Indonesian pop art is witnessing a dynamic evolution, thanks in part to the large surge of consistent talents from artists groomed at art institutions in Yogyakarta. Among them, Lugas Syllabus is a standout— having made a name for himself on the international art stage.
Depicting fantastical imagery Syllabus’s work interweaves a mix of references from pop culture, folklore, and personal memories. His art is a representation of the maturing landscape in Indonesian contemporary art. Proliferated with imagery of modern East and Western cultures, references to technologies are also common. His art is relevant and the subject matter speaks for itself. I encourage you to acquaint yourself with it.
Starting or ending your day with focused mobility work can set the tone for mental and physical well-being. As the body’s tension can mirror your state of mind, dedicate time to relax and mobilise with a moment of mobility as a strategy to alleviate excess mental strain.
“…the alignment of who you are and what you do”
The concept of aligning who you are with what you do has always resonated with me. There’s immense privilege in doing a profession that mirrors your core values and life’s mission. It’s more than just the pursuit of passions; it’s more about a reflection of your true self through the work you spend most of your time in. Many aren’t lucky enough to find or experience such order, but I’ve always been someone who strives for such synchronicities.
However, as someone who’s also deeply committed to self-development, I’ve found that sometimes personal growth can outpace my professional evolution. The rapid change surprises me and leaves me feeling restless. Can you relate to the same sense of restlessness?
If you’re feeling lively and crave some energising tunes, dive into ‘Lick You’– a compilation packed with sultry rhythms guaranteed to set you in a fist-pumping mood. It’s the perfect accompaniment to dance all your stress away or to prepare you for a night out.
But, as usual, if you’re not in the mood for a boogie, check out my Spotify page where I have plenty of genres and moods for you to sink into your couch.
What is your pace for personal growth and does it match your professional development in your career?
