David Henry Thoreau celebrated as a transcendentalist for his iconic book “Walden” and his idealistic philosophies, takes centre stage in the episode WORK: David Henry Thoreau on Making a Meaningful Living episode on The Next Big Idea podcast.
While many recognise Thoreau’s “Walden” for its naturalistic views, John Kaag, author of “Henry at Work: Thoreau on Making a Living,” offers a fresh interpretation. Kaag points to how “Walden” was Thoreau’s response to the societal call to abandon the relentless pursuit of materialism in favour of nature’s embrace. Diving into Thoreau’s lifestyle, the discussion provides an insightful exploration of one of history’s most revered writers, poets, and thinkers.
For those seeking a more meaningful relationship with their work, or aiming to find purpose-driven employment, this episode is a must-listen. Thoreau’s insights, remarkably prescient for his time, resonate deeply in today’s context, revealing the timeless nature of his ideas. His ideas transcend the times and fascinatingly still share accurate advice for us today.
If you’re seeking to reignite your creative spirit, Julia Cameron’s transformative book The Artist Way is an essential journey to step into. Far from a typical guide, Cameron offers a fresh perspective on tapping into your creative core and unveiling latent talents.
The book sheds light on how many creatives inadvertently obstruct their own potential, shackled by the critical voices ingrained in them. These deep-seated beliefs, which often stem from fear and insecurity stand in the way of a creative renaissance that you always have access to.
Cameron’s distinctive techniques, from the ‘morning pages’ to the ‘artist’s dates,’ might seem unconventional but serve as a catalyst for self-discovery. This book doesn’t just champion creativity; it’s a mirror and a path to self-awareness.
Enlightening and transformative, the process has resonated and redefined millions of lives globally since its release. While penned for ‘creatives’ in the traditional sense, this book is applicable to all, because, I believe creativity is innate in all of us.

This week, I’m spotlighting a unique group of puppeteers from Yogyakarta, distinct from the usual artists I feature. Their innovative approach to theatre and storytelling caught my attention.
Indonesia is where the age-old tradition of wayang kulit shadow puppets, a Javanese art form that predates the 10th century and stands as one of the world’s most enduring puppetry styles. These tales told using water buffalo-hung puppets, are deeply rooted in Javanese culture.
Paper Moon Puppet Theater’s offers a fresh twist on this ancient craft. Through performances, art installations, exhibitions, and collaborative projects, this internationally acclaimed collective keeps the puppetry flame alive, making them truly deserving of celebration.
If you haven’t integrated daily fasting into your routine but seek a simple method to bolster your mental discipline and potentially enhance longevity, consider skipping breakfast or dinner. Embrace intermittent fasting for a week as a challenge or skip one meal for a day.
As a wise monk once shared, the term ‘breakfast’ is aptly named– it’s the moment you ‘break’ your ‘fast’. I can’t verify the historical accuracy of this, but it’s a thought to think about and perhaps why most cultures incorporate some type of fasting.
“Stop worrying about what other people think of you and focus on yourself instead. Focus on what makes you happy; focus on what makes your soul feel at peace.
You are your biggest commitment, so start loving your flaws, your awkwardness, your weirdness, your intensity, and your vulnerability. Life becomes so much more fulfilling when you are simply yourself.
The world keeps spinning whether people understand you or not, so why not make this next trip around the sun about you?”

Easier said than done. If you’re like me, dealing with the need to please is one of the greatest personal hurdles in life. Politeness and niceness have had such stature in my upbringing, that being able to say no to things and be truthful to myself is still something I still need to grow into.
But, as life progresses and the more I acknowledge life’s fleeting timeline, the more I find value in allowing myself to be brave in allowing myself to exist as myself in the world– as isn’t the entire point of life to live your best life as yourself? What’s the point in denying yourself of yourself?
I am inspired today, writing from a place of peace and tranquillity I share with you a tracklist made for relaxation. Sweet Dreams will ease you into a state of daydreaming that’s perfect for the weekend to come.
What is the truest measure of a life well-lived? What if you knew you only had until tomorrow to live, how would you spend your day today?
