Going back to basics. Your cheat sheet to The Happy Hue method.
Your body is the essential container that allows you to experience every aspect of life as you know it. Without your physical form, the concept of your ‘self’ ceases to exist. What is a world without your physical body? Setting aside the various beliefs about life beyond the physical realm— be it reincarnation, an afterlife, or some other spiritual continuations—the tangible reality you engage with daily and most of the other life experiences you encounter are all intricately tied to the profound intelligence of your material body.
Though often overlooked and very rarely appreciated to its fullest. Can you imagine what your life would be without your physical existence? What would life be without the experience of breathing, moving, or the richness of all your glorious sensations, like sight, touch, smell, sounds or taste? What is life without a beating heart?
For the physical body, sleep is when the body goes into repair mode. While you’re enjoying a night of slumber, fluctuating through the different sleep stages, your body is proactively recuperating. From muscle growth to tissue repair to protein synthesis and maintaining your cardiovascular health, sleep is foundational to your body's health.
In an ideal world, you’d be sleeping well, exercising regularly, and eating well, but in the scenario when life catches up with you, which it often does— your first priority is quality sleep above all else, as it’s only during sleep that your body releases hormones to help repair your cells. It’s also when your body regulates your body’s metabolic systems— and its use of energy.
While popular culture often glorifies the concept of ‘no rest days’ and productivity above all else, the importance of quality rest and recovery for high functioning cannot be overlooked. Fortunately, the tides are turning.
While rest and recovery were positioned as a sign of weakness, this is a misleading limiting belief. Even amongst professional athletes, intentional rest and recovery are not just recommended; they are mandated. Most will have a dedicated team managing their rest and recovery strategies. In some cases, they’ll even have a dedicated professional solely focused on optimising how they rest and recover. Why?
Because rest and recovery, for the body, is the edge that will make all the difference. If you’re interested in peak performance, optimal rest and recovery are without question, essential.
Passive rest might look like sleeping or simply doing nothing at all, while proactive options can include engaging in gentle activities like brisk walks or yoga. It all depends on you and what you need at any given moment. Even simply finding moments to sit still and be fully present is a valuable form of rest and recovery that every ‘body’ needs (pun intended)!
